Ford Motor Company's commitment to support the 450 ppm CO2 target, the competitive environment and customer expectations for reduced fuel consumption will impact the technology selection for future powertrains. Emission regulations and driving cycles are requesting higher engine loads and acceleration levels at more stringent emission and CO2 levels. The new Real Driving Emission (RDE) legislation requests pollutant emission regulations in an even wider range in ambient temperature and altitude. While the internal combustion engine remains the dominant power source for future vehicles, the level of hybridization and electrification will increase and are well suited to face the challenges of future legislation. Ford Motor Company launched Full Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid and BEV Vehicles in North America and Europe successfully in combination with a gasoline engine architecture. A 48V Mild Hybrid system has been identified as one of the potential technologies, to fulfil future legislation and vehicle level requirements as a cost effective solution and with the potential of a seamless integration of today's vehicle architecture as a bolt on solution. Vehicle system cost of Full HEV systems and 48V Mild Hybrid systems as well as the challenging future vehicle level requirements have to be constantly reviewed and monitored in the upcoming years.
