The new cyclic corrosion test VDA 233-102, developed in a VDEh working group and standardized in the VDA, reveals corrosion patterns which correspond well to practical experience with a lot of substrates. This applies in particular to the relation between zinc and steel subsurface corrosion at scribes, but also to the filiform corrosion of aluminium. The VDA 233-102 includes salt spray phases and a sophisticated temperature and humidity profile. The test is appropriate for different types of corrosion test chambers. The performance of the new cyclic corrosion test and its application options were examined in seven round robin tests by the members of the working group. The corrosion test centre of Daimler AG has introduced the VDA 233-102 already and will extend the test capacity in future. The experiences collected in the meantime confirm that VDA 233-102 is very suitable for painted substrates in the automotive area. The correlation to the results of outdoor exposure is particularly good. The test showed to be reproducible over a long timeframe at a lot of test locations. Additional applications must be checked in individual cases. Limits are currently in development. They will be incorporated in all corrosion-relevant Daimler supply specifications. In the interim the quality of all new corrosion protection developments should be checked in the new test. This is to be taken into account in particular by suppliers for corrosion protection materials.
