In this paper, a force analysis of a large linear synchronous motor used for public transportation is presented. Thrust force and normal force are calculated and the average force and the force oscillations are presented. Pole shifting and skewing techniques are used to reduce the forces pulsations. 2-D time stepping finite element method simulations are used for magnetic calculations, which take into account the secondary motion. An analytical calculation is done on a simplified model of the linear synchronous motor without pole shifting to evaluate the machine performance.
