POFs are already used in different sensor systems and in various fields of optical communication, e.g. in the automotive sector or in small office, home office communication. However, only a few key components fabricated by mass production techniques for POF networks are available so far. Even basic components, such as splices and couplers, are mostly fabricated manually. These circumstances result in high costs and fluctuations in components' performance. Typically, available couplers have high insertion losses due to their manufacturing method. This can only be compensated by higher power budgets, which makes problems with eye safety and limited LED output power. In order to produce couplers with better performances new fabrication methods are indispensable. A cheap and effective way to produce couplers for POF communication systems is injection molding.
