An investigation of the conducted radio-noise emission from a vehicle ignition system is described. It has been determined that the spark discharge generates considerable noise through the coupling capacitance that exists in ignition coil, resulting in serious conducted Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) problems. The dominant EMI path in the ignition circuit is identified by three different radiation experiments. A proposed ignition coil with shielding layer for the purpose of limit of EMI is developed. Experimental results demonstrate that interference can be dramatically reduced in the range from 16 MHz to 25 MHz by implementing the modified ignition coil, and the improvement increases above 16 MHz, reaching around 15 dB at some frequency points.
