The S-tronic double clutch gearbox which will replace the R-tronic automated-shift gearbox for the new Audi R8 after the product update is described in the paper. Development objectives for the gearbox were: - shifting without interruption to the power flow; - shift times superior to competition; - outstanding road performance and acceleration; - reduced fuel consumption; - grater driving refinement; - suitable for the Modular super Sports car platform for the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo. The package requirements showed that the gearbox hat to be short and wide. The central hydraulics were moved to the rear left and installed vertically at the side, while the parking lock and associated hydraulics were located on top of the gearbox. A 7-speed gearset of three-shaft configuration was chosen to obtain a short gearbox with a dual-mass flywheel. The gearset is lubricated by oil under pressure, the drive shafts lubricated by oil immersion, whereas the pinion head bearing is supplied separately with oil from a trap tray. The S-tronic has a parking lock, the park-by-wire system was implemented with an Auto-P function. A hydraulic control concept was developed for this purpose. Shifting performance of the S-tronic is described. Quality of shifting performance is discussed concerning the following criteria: shift time during a manual shift and gradient of engine speed.
