Potential mechanical jam failures of the internal mechanics still present a show stopper for electromechanical actuators in some safety critical applications. One approach to address this problem is the implementation of redundant electromechanical actuators on system level and the installation of a disconnect mechanism for each actuator. When a jammed electromechanical actuator is disconnected from the flight control system, the redundant actuators are still capable to take over the control function. In this paper investigations into pyrotechnical disconnect mechanisms are presented, which includes the comparison of a preferred pyromechanism design - which is based on initiators - with several different pyrotechnic disconnect devices and the description of the setup options for each component. Promising experimental validation results of the preferred pyromechanism design with pneumatic pre-tests as well as results of the availability analysis indicate the feasibility of this approach for electromechanical actuation in safety critical applications.
