FSD Fahrzeugsystemdaten GmbH, which operates in association with motor vehicle testing organizations, develops and distributes the technology required for testing electronically controlled vehicle safety systems, as ordered by and in conjunction with PTI organizations (Periodical Technical Inspection), vehicle manufacturers and importers. Due to their great accident prevention potential, since 2006 it has been a requirement for electronically controlled vehicle safety systems to be tested as part of the PTI. The PTI adapter uses the OBD interface to communicate with the vehicle. First, an automatic test is conducted to determine whether the systems which were originally installed are still present. The test results show up an the expert's control and display panels. Next, the PTI adapter helps the inspector check status, function and effect during vehicle and component analysis by utilizing test messages that the vehicle manufacturer has already implemented. Working in this manner makes the PTI more effective and efficient. In order to be able to further develop the PTI and its applied testing technology in a targeted manner in the future, it is essential to have the most accurate and comprehensive knowledge risks to vehicle safety, e.g. degradation, malfunctions and failures in safety-relevant parts and systems. By "accurate and comprehensive knowledge" in this context, we mean the answers to questions such as, "When and under what conditions do risks arise?", "Do these risks increase in intensity or frequency?" and "How do they play out under various operating conditions?" Until recently, the PTI's test results have served as the most important data basis for analyzing these questions. However, one disadvantage of this data is that it can only describe one snapshot at a time, and second, the data is largely distorted due to repair and maintenance work that is specially carried out prior to the PTI. It would be very difficult to glean any reliable knowledge about the occurrence and progression of risks through use of this data alone. Therefore, additional information is required about the condition of the vehicles while they are in traffic shortly before a general inspection or repair, or right before an accident, and there are various ways of obtaining this type of information.
