The most preferable anode material of Li-ion batteries for EV and HEV use is graphitizable carbon having turbostratic structure or hard carbon where Li can be inserted and extracted rapidly providing high power capability. There carbons, however, has large initial capacity loss (ICL) during the first Li insertion process, which causes poor specific capacity. This paper is initiated in an attempt to find out a convenient way to reduce ICL. By the use of 1000°C fired mesophase carbon fiber as the evaluation sample we examined several methods to reduce the ICL such as treatment with several chemical reducing reagents and. Electrochemical reduction, heat-treatment under different atmospheres. Since ICL is considered due to the electrochemical reduction of oxidative entities reducing reagent was supposed to be quite effective but ICL was found not caused by only the surface radicals but also due to the internal species. At last we found the heating at an appropriate temperature with appropriate time. Finally, mild oxidation treatment (MOT) at appropriate temperature in the presence of low partial pressure of oxygen.
