Most pedestrian accidents occur when the pedestrian crosses the road at night. In order to reduce the pedestrian accidents, presence of the pedestrian should be informed to a driver. Therefore, the lighting system which supporting the driver to recognize the pedestrians on the road in advance is needed to reduce the pedestrian accidents. In this study, we developed the Spot Light System that notifies the driver of pedestrian on the road. Near infrared sensor and irradiation equipment achieve the image ahead of the vehicle. After the image processing work, a headlamp ECU detects a located pedestrian and operates the Spot Light System to illuminate the detected pedestrian. The operating range of the Spot Light System covers 3-lanes up to 150 m ahead. The Spot Light System is installed in the headlamp. The Spot Light System has low frequency of use because the system only operates at night when the pedestrians are detected. To increase the availability of the system, the Spot Light System also operates as DRL and a part of the driving beam. Our Spot Light System is used as DRL in the daytime and operates as the Spot Light function and also supports the driving beam at night.
