When measuring the noise emitted by a train passing at constant speed, a significant contribution may come from the track. Hence, the accurate assessment of the noise emission of railway vehicles requires a tight control of the track acoustic parameters. The concept of reference track was developed to meet this requirement. However, the need to carry out measurements on tracks which strictly comply with the limits of track decay rates and rail acoustic roughness may lead to undue stringent requirements: small deviations from these limits may not have a significant effect on the measured noise value. The purpose of this paper is to propose a method which introduces some flexibility in the assessment of conformity of track sections with regard to these specifications.
