In this paper, a fault detection and localization method based on the parametric estimation is presented and applied to the air path system of a diesel engine. This method uses directly the results of a parametric estimation of the system which is nonlinear and whose state variables and parameters are strongly coupled. Our goal is to detect clearly a fault occurred on a nonlinear model of Turbocharged Diesel Engine (TDE) published in the literature and to decide if this fault represents a fault of sensor, actuator or system. After that, we would like to build a control strategy called Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) with which all detected dysfunctions and parametric variations will be taken into account.
