Coordinating AC mitigation with cathodic protection and other aspects of pipeline design, construction, and operation is essential. Background is a high-pressure natural gas pipeline parallel and crossing overhead three-phase high voltage AC power transmission lines with phase-to-ground voltages in the range from 115 kV to 500 kV. An evaluation of anticipated AC effects on the pipeline without mitigation and a design strategy for a safe and reliable operation without excessive pipe potentials or unnecessary concern regarding AC-influenced corrosion was performed. Network simulations of a pipe-to-soil potential under steady-state and fault conditions, with and without mitigation were performed. Without effective mitigation, these potentials would present a clear thread to personnel safety and equipment reliability. One parallel mitigation conductor made of steel-cored zinc ribbon adjacent to the pipeline is often sufficient to reduce pipeline steady-state and fault potentials to less than the upper tolerable project limit.
