The key idea behind TAF TSI (Telematic Applications for Freight Technical Specification for Interoperability) is to create a comprehensive set of specifications that will allow actors in the rail freight market to exchange information. It does not require them to replace their existing information technology systems, but instead sets specific standards for the information and data that needs to be exchanged between the different players. These in turn will facilitate better co-operation and the delivery of a wider and higher quality range of services, as well as making possible advances in key problem areas that exist in the rail freight industry today, such as the ability to predict when a shipment will arrive when it crosses national frontiers. An essential requirement for TAF and other telematic applications is to guarantee a minimum quality of service, particularly in terms of technical compatibility. TAF TSI should enable customers to track their shipments much more easily, particularly when using the cargo crosses national borders. Steps must be taken to ensure that databases, software and data communication protocols are all developed in a manner allowing for maximum data interchange between different applications and operators, obviously excluding confidential commercial data. It should also guarantee easy access to information for the users. Next steps were the production of a Strategic European Deployment Plan and the creation of the Common Components and Interface project. Rolling stock holders and owners to create a standard rolling stock reference database.
