Overhead presentation. For the friction stir welding (FSW) of aerospace structures different platforms are presented: parallel kinematic machines, Gantry-Type FSW Machines, Modified machining centres, serial indsutrial robots. Advantages and limitations of each process are outlined. Critical phenomena of FSW with serial industrial robots are the static and dynamic behavior of the robots and robotization issues and seam defects. State-of-the-art approaches are outlined and the following limitations are discussed: Empirical correction of tool deviations. Empirical determination of tool plunge depth. Not adaptive to changes in process conditions. No management of dynamical phenomena in control strategy. Program Structure & Achievements of the Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre (AMTC) are presented. Innovative RFSW control technology is demonstrated. Finally seam properties of robotically-welded joints are shown.
