For X-ray stress analysis, plane stress condition is usually assumed because of the surface measurement. It is, however, known that triaxial stresses are often observed in ground steels, railway rails and composite materials etc. In these samples, strong deformation in particular direction or microscopic stresses due to the second phase of which elastic constants are different from those of the matrix is related. An area detector type X-ray triaxial stress analysis method was proposed in this study. In the method of this study, two Debye rings are used for determining stress through the relative change of diffraction data as much as possible like the sin2psi method. It is not necessary to prepare the precise d0 value when the stress components are determined. The method was applied to residual stress measurement in railway rails used in service.
