This paper discusses the possibility of different combinations of energy converters and energy storages in an advanced vehicle electrical system (VES) - with fuel cell-based auxiliary power unit (APU) and double layer capacitor - in order to reduce weight, construction volume, fossil fuel consumption and the carbon dioxide emission. An APU could support the VES if consumption exceeds available power. System design has been studied based on an energy balance. Therefore measurements of electrical loads in vehicles, of batteries and double layer capacitors have been performed, which serve for modeling the components of the VES.
