A sensitivity analysis on finite element models for the calculation of heat effects during welding is described. The influence of the variation of different modelling parameters on the temperature and structural behaviour of components during welding processes including the cooling down to the ambient temperature is investigated. With the aid of different modelling examples, various modelling aspects are defined and their effect on the temperature field, welding distortion and residual stresses is observed. Hereby, modelling parameters like the temperature dependent material properties, the definition of the heat input, the clamping conditions or the structure stiffness are varied intentionally in order to examine the structural behaviour of parts. The sensitivity analysis of the simulation of welding distortion by varying different modelling aspects provides valuable information concerning the deviation of the calculated results from the results based on the initial input data or the measurements. The results of the study provides appropriate knowledge for the efficient modelling of further welding assemblies and multi-stage joining processes for industrial applications.
