This paper treats with the design of remote access to automotive control units. The authors introduce a concept for the communication of an electronic control unit (ECU) via a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). This project is integrated in the joint project AUTOSAFE which is initialized by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). AUTOSAFE treats with the avoidance of traffic accidents and it aims at improving road safety through an integral safety system. This comprises the improving of road safety during any driving phase and flexibility by a scaleable and unitized platform. For this purpose it is essential to develop electronic control units (ECU) which support the necessary functions of the safety system. Furthermore, basic diagnostic-functions have to be provided, e.g. for the access of fault memory, monitoring of Controler Area Network (CAN-) data or software updates on the ECU. The development of new applications in the automotive sector requires a flexible method to transfer data from and to an ECU. When the applications are ready for outdoor tests, it is advantageous to observe their operations in real time. The data has to be transmitted immediately over wide ranges without a wired connection to a diagnosis station.
