(continued from number 3(2007)4, page 355-369) Rattle/impact induced noises represent an automotive industry concern because they affect both the consumer's perception and warranty expense. This paper attempts to evaluate impact induced noise. The mechanical properties of Polypropylene (PP), Aluminum (Al), Magnesium (Mg), steel, brass, and Polyamide 66 (nylon 66) (PA or PA66) samples were determined and rated against their acoustic signature when subjected to an impact event. Next, the sound recordings were used in a jury study to compare rattle behaviour and the loudness metric of N5 in sones was the single factor that had the best subjective to objective correlation.
