Conventional exhaust sealing solutions have limited temperature capabilities. They either degrade under the extreme temperatures, or permanently deform, severely compromising their performance and durability. This paper details a novel exhaust sealing solution by utilizing a multi-layer metal gasket technology comprising of high temperature alloys and high temperature coating. The exclusive portfolio of high temperature alloys (HTAs) cover a wide operating temperature range, each suitable over a range of temperature, beyond the functional limitations of the commonly used 300 series stainless steel. In addition, the HTAs are all coated with a novel high temperature coating, which maintains its integrity, frictional characteristics and sealability at temperatures in excess of 1000 deg C. Multi-layer steel MLS designs are currently the favored solution for new gasket applications, particularly within the automotive industry. However, the temperature resistance of the molybdenum disulfide coating and the loss of strength of 300 series stainless steel limit the effective sealing of current multi layer gaskets. The new sealing system described here can address these concerns and provide a very effective sealing solution. This paper has described a new portfolio of High Temperature Alloys (HTAs) that are all available coated with a new high temperature coating (HTC). These coated HTA gaskets provide extremely effective sealing solutions at temperatures in excess of those that can be sealed by traditional methods, including 300 and 400 series stainless steel MLS gaskets.
