The topology optimisation method as a weight optimisation tool for the concept design phase is relatively new in the aeroengine industry. After a brief introduction to the method itself, specific aspects and requirements of implementing this method into the design process of structural aeroengine components are discussed. The discussion is illustrated by the use of this method in the design of a bearing support housing for a new variant of the Rolls-Royce Deutschland BR700 engine family. Notable weight reductions have been achieved by using topology optimisation. Hence the Rolls-Royce Deutschland design process for structural components is continuously being adjusted and improved to integrate topology optimisation and related optimisation methods more efficiently.
