One of the major tasks of the Establishing Group of the Tire Model Performance Test (TMPT) was to work out a table of required tire data and a list of tire measurements that can be used by the tire model developers to parametrize their models. As the developers use very different and individual approaches to represent the tire behaviour and the range of application of the different models varies considerably, they naturally have different needs of tire data and tests. The tire used for the TMPT is a specific test tire manufactured by Continental. The demanded tire data and tests include (1) general tire data, (2) tests for vertical, lateral and longitudinal stiffness, (3) rolling radius, longitudinal and lateral steady-state tire behaviour, longitudinal and lateral relaxation lengths, (4) radial and transverse tire vibration modes, (5) cleat tests for different speeds and inflation pressures and different heights of the cleat (if not stated otherwise the cleat is normal to the running direction of the wheel centre). Since the performance of the tire is to be ivestigated, the test bench needs to be as simple as possible but has to allow the necessary input quantities, e.g. a special load or a fixed distance wheel hub to surface. Following the simulation test procedures, defined input variables have to be implemented. The horizontal, longitudinal velocity is provided by the longitudinal motion of the sledge, which is the basic body of the test bench. The rotation of the vertical wheel guidance device with respect to te sledge represents the steering angle and therewith the side slip angle of the wheel. This kind of test bench - or a similar one - allows to derive essential simulation results to evaluate the tire characteristics with a minimum influence of a wheel suspension or the test bench itself. All inputs, as they may occur during driving a car, can be applied. Besides each test description, conditions and specifications with respect to load, load application, etc. have to be defined and stated. Furthermore, the output of the simulations is chosen and listed for comparable results, that can be plotted in corresponding diagrams. It should be mentioned that the selection of tests was a compromise between possibilities, calculation effort, data processing, and efficient presentation of the intention of the TMPT. The tests are split into capability tests (handling and higher frequency tests) and validation tests. For the capability tests, the tire models should show their performance for special conditions, which are in general not supported by measurements. This kind of tests has the intention to provide information of the physically plausible area of application. For the validation tests, the models should be able to give a good approximation of the available measurements.
