In order to study the practice of resistance welding in german car body workshops, an investigation in fifty different workshops has been carried out. Principally (90%) appointed workshops (BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Opel, PSA and VW) but also a few (10%) free workshops were visited for the investigation. Preference was given to the appointed workshops since they have corresponding recommendations for welding machines to which they should be oriented. In the study the equipment level, the electrical installation and fusing of the welding machines was classified. Data about the used welding power, the electrode forces and the weldings conditions were evaluated as well as the expert know-how and skills of the employees. The described results are not representative, but they provide a less favourable picture, as was confirmed by various experts. Possibilities of improving the unsatisfactory situation are given with view on modernization of the welding equipment, the development of basic criteria (standards), the installation of a central parameter database, the training of workers and an enhanced quality control and quality assurance.
