In order to ensure safe operation of the increasing rail transport of regional rail networks by means of traffic management procedures, investments into train protection systems are required. However, the benefits of economic and flexible traffic management shall be retained for the operators. In addition, the costs of a train protection system must be permanently viable. The train protection system for signalled traffic management of the Kaiserstuhlbahn lines presented in this article meets these requirements and thus contributes to safe and cost-effective operation of regional rail networks despite the increasing demand for transport. With the Sicas S7(Siemens Computer-aided Signalling) base system, Siemens Transportation Systems is extending its portfolio by low-complexity systems to meet the new market requirements. This base system has been used for train protection of the Kaiserstuhlbahn lines for the first time in Germany. This system is based on standard industrial components and enables to offer systems involving low investment and maintenance costs. Refinement of the Sicas S5 system which has proven itself since 1996 to the current hardware platform has entailed a multitude of impulses for simplification of the system architecture. Further benefits of the system presented in this article result from the consistent use of LED signals, use of the Siemens Vicos OC 111 (Vicos - Vehicle and Infrastructure Control and Operating System) man-machine interface system and implementation of level-crossing protection installations by means of the BUE S7 system.
