The ACR (Active Control Retractor) is a reversible pretensioner that already operates during the pre-crash phase, using a SMA (Situation Management Algorithm) that evaluates the sensor signals. It is described how the SMA is developed and tested under using advanced simulation technologies. The following models have been developed: 1) a model of the vehicle, which gives an input for the SMA, 2) the SMA, 3) a model of the motor driver, 4) an ACR model which simulates the dynamic behaviour of the belt-system, 5) an occupant model which simulates the occupant dynamic and interaction to the ACR. The car and the SMA block act as sensor and controller and the ACR as actuator. The whole simulation system was configured in Matlab/ Simulink. The interface and interaction with the simulation results of several components are described. Two simulations with the same manoeuvre (double lane change) but different SMA sensitivities are carried out. The example shows that the simulation system allows the calibration of the SMA without configuring a real test car. It represents an efficient tool in adapting the ACR to specific cars.
