Safety improvement is always the number one priority for Li-ion battery development. Without advanced safety technology, higher energy technology and higher power technology would not be viable in actual applications. Numerous safety technologies including non-flammable electrolyte and additives have been developed. However, advanced safety technology for large battery packs has to be explored further in order to meet the arising need of HEV and EV application. This report presents safety improvements made possible by Quallion's unique safety technology, SaFE-LYTE. This advanced safety technology uses a battery's internal unused space and fills it with a flame retardant that is immiscible with the electrolyte. Unlike most traditional miscible additives, SaFE-LYTE additive does not have any adverse effect on the battery's performance.
