A high-power vacuum suction oil skimming system for onboard equipment was developed, mounted on Ishizuchi, an oil recovery vessel. The system utilizes a high-power, large capacity vacuum blower to generate high-speed air flow at the suction mouth and riser pipe. Ishizuchi is a 190-gross-ton catamaran vessel that has bifunctions of debris sweeping for general use and oil recovery in oil-spill incidents. It is important to prepare effective measures to respond to an accident to protect the marine and coastal environment from the hazardous pollution of an oil spill. A series of experiments were carried out using small-sized models conducted by PARI in the STORMS (Simulation Tank for Oil Recovery in Maritime Situations. The vessel has 90-kilowatt, twin cascade roots blowers that generate speeds capable of oil/water suction at more than 30 cubic meters per hour. Ishizuchi will play a significant role in protecting Japan's marine environment from hazardous air pollution.
