The introduction of an electric powertrain into a vehicle is a major change within the vehicle system and offers several opportunities to adapt the vehicle to the powertrain in order to benefit from the differences compared to a conventional powertrain based on an internal combustion engine. To demonstrate this potential of electrical powertrain technologies for a more efficient car, Michelin and PSI joined forces to realize a passenger vehicle on a white sheet of paper approach to maximize the opportunities of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell system operated with H2 and O2 and a pure electrical powertrain. The characteristics of the vehicle are discussed and the performance and consumption behavior of the HY-LIGHT vehicle are presented. The hydrogen consumption over the entire test has been evaluated at 679 g/100 km (2.52 lge/100 km gasoline equivalent). This correlates almost perfectly, due to extremely limited hydrogen purges, to a hydrogen utilization of over 99 %. The mean efficiency of the fuel cell system over the total test is 63 %. Included in this number is the consumption of the fuel cell system auxiliaries. To operate the vehicle, the energy for the active electric suspension, the auxiliaries as e.g. cooling system and the losses of the power converters have to be supplied. A total of 2.55 kWh is needed which is equivalent to 11.3 % of the fuel consumption.
