The usual reciprocating piston pumps with a connecting-rod mechanism can be hardly improved because of a limited controlability of a stepwise varying flow intensity, a relatively low pump piston swept capacity (small cylinder volume) and a high load imposed to the pump elements during the cyclic acceleration and braking of the pistons. Therefore, a new types of pumps for crude oil were developed in Russia. The first Mud Master pump with electrohydraulic drive was developed by VNIIneftemas together with the Norwegian company Maritime Hydraulics for a sea drilling platform located on the Norwegian shelf. The pressure-output relationships were derived and used for an efficient controlling the pump operation at low frequency of the piston motion (below 40/min). The prototype pump aggregate NA900 was successfully tested in 1998. The pump aggregate had a lower efficiency factor (by 2 %) than the usual connecting-rod pumps but showed much higher reliabilioty of the piston and valves and a longer operation life time. The microprocessor-aided control includes both start-up, operation and shut-down of the pump stand (plunger diameter 180 mm, power 800 kW) at a minimum energy consumption at the output of 1500 l/min and 5-% content of gases. The mass of the NA900 pump stand (9 t) is much lower than the mass of the usual UNBT-950 pump stand (21.5 t). The new pump stand was lately (2001) built in the Polet company at Omsk, RU.
