Areas of construction on public roads are a permanent source of traffic problems. The special marking of these areas, the smaller size of the lanes and mostly the high quantity of older information (lane markings, traffic signs) without semantics raise problems that are not present elsewhere. For a driver assistance system one important aspect is to be able to distinguish between important and meaningless information in such an area. This paper presents several methods that treat the special cases that appear in the lane marking detection in construction areas for both highways and country roads. The system complements the lane marking detection methods by treating the special case of temporary yellow markings that override the normal white markings. It uses both position and color to separate the valid markings from the former ones left in place but without semantics for the driver. The system showed that most of the encountered situations can be successfully interpreted. The yellow markings detection is stable even in cases when only few of the markings were presented at the output of the lane detector. At night due to the reflective nature of the yellow marking the results are usually better than at day. The worst cases were encountered shortly after rainfall when the street surface was still covered with water that extremely reduced the contrast of the markings. If old markings with lower reflectivity were present, the stability of the system was affected.
