In this paper shock absorbers with magnetorheological (MR) fluids were described. These elements can be used in many applications related to vehicle machines such as bumpers, dampers, shock absorbers, vibration eliminators etc. Basic theoretical relationships which allow design and modelling of MR fluid shock absorbers are shown. Experimental designs of MR absorber and some example results of research were presented and discussed. The application of PI force controller used to improve the dissipation characteristic of built MR shock absorber has been shown. The investigations have confirmed that the usage of MR fluid in shock absorber improves the braking characteristics. The comparison of characteristics obtained by using shock absorbers without control and characteristics obtained when using force control has shown a significant improvement in the second case. The braking characteristics of a controlled shock absorber can be quite easily adapted to the requirements by an electronic control circuit. The MR shock absorbers can be included in many applications, both in vehicles and in fully automated production lines, in which different elements with different energy will be moved at the same time and where their kinetic energy is not known. In future investigations more attention will be paid to developing the control method of such shock absorbers. Those works will be focused on the possibilities of using different measured signals to control the shock absorber.
