New regulations require that the pretension in seatbelts be measured before certain crash tests are carried out. Traditionally, these measurements are carried out using a low range load cell (pretensions are typically around 50 N) which is then removed to allow a traditional seatbelt load cell to be installed. This manipulation causes the pretension to vary and therefore gives rise to incorrect measurements. Another, less common, method is to rely on the Signal generated by the seatbelt load cell itself. However, the range of these devices is around 15 000 N, and at 50 N the usefulness of the measured signal is to be severely questioned.
