The information presented here demonstrates that the latest generation of Concentric's Variable Flow Oil pump not only addresses the cost and robustness issues of the earlier product, it has exceeded the performance criteria set. In addition to quantifying and detailing the available savings achieved to date, the paper more importantly identified much greater opportunities if used as a key tool to benefit the total system. Thus far, quantifiable savings for heavy duty engines are between 2 and 3kW at rated speed and up to 1kW at a cruise speed of 1500rpm. The cases for part load and piston cooling improvements are presented which can take advantage of such a device. Control of piston cooling alone can potentially double the available savings offering fuel economy savings in excess of 0.5% even for non sympathetic drive cycles. Further work is profiled to evaluate drive cycles spanning heavy, medium and light duty diesels, together with advanced positive displacement CFD analysis and development.
