Lightweight and energy saving are quite important for high-speed trains. As recent progress of superconductivity technology is remarkable, a 4MVA superconducting transformer was designed by using a Bi2223 wire to proof its lightweight and efficiency. In this article specifications for a superconducting transformer were determined. The application of the windings to the designed transformer is described as well as the connection of the windings to a traction convertor. Transformers are mounted underfloor on Shinkansen cars except double-decker type cars. The mass and efficiency of a conventional transformer was estimated to be 3,000kg and 96% respectively. For the cases mentioned, four cases of 1 turn voltage were studied: 16.7V (two-thirds of the conventional transformer design), 14.3V, 12.5V (half) and 10.0V (two-fifths) to find an optimum 1 turn voltage. The results of designing are presented concerning the magnetic field distribution and the a.c. loss according to the number of layers for the primary winding as well as weight and efficiency calculations. A minute design for the lightest case was carried out, which means 14 primary winding layers and one-turn voltage of 12.5V. On the assumption that a.c. loss is reduced to the theoretical value in the near future, 14 primary winding layers and 12.5V/turn lead to the smallest transformer weight. As a result, the weight is calculated to be 2,536kg, which is smaller than that of a conventional transformer (3,000kg). The weight of a core amounts to 32 % of the total weight. The weight of a refrigerator amounts to 32%. The weight of superconducting windings amounts to only 3%. In this case, the efficiency is calculated to be 99.3%, which is much better than that of a conventional transformer 96%. As a primary winding model and a secondary winding model are already manufactured and tested, work to manufacture the superconducting transformer is already in progress.
