From the viewpoint of the environmental protection, research of pollutants behaviour, which are emitted from automotive and marine engines into the real world, have become important more and more. For example, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) from gasoline and diesel vehicles have been paid much attention, so that the very strict regulations have been applied for the automotive emissions. In spite of that, local air pollution by high concentration NO(x), which is detected along busy roads and near large cross-sections, has not been solved yet. As for the marine engines, the regulation 13 of Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 that has been suggested by International Marine Organization for preventing the air pollution from ships will come into force in June 2004. This means that an on-board analyzer will be required and become important for continuous NO(x) measurement on the sea. Recently, the authors have developed an on-board measurement system for automotive emission testing, which is utilizing a ZrO2 type NO(x)-O2 sensor as one of the main components. In this paper, test results of this system that has been actually obtained from on-road measurements using a diesel vehicle are described as well as the configuration of the system. In addition, the possibility and effectiveness of the ZrO2-type sensor for marine application is also discussed, based on continuous monitoring results on actual ships.
