The EU- Commission defined the task to reduce road fatalities by 50 % until 2010. The objective and focus of 'The EU Approach to Road Safety and Intelligent Transport systems' (ITS, Intelligent Vehicle Systems) are defined as to 'Improve Safety, Security, Comfort and Efficiency in all Transport modes' and 'Focusing on Advanced Pilot/Driver Assistance Systems '. The industry has responded to the European Commission programs and has developed new, efficient 24 GHz Short Range Radar (SRR) solutions for Road Safety and Intelligent Transport Systems. These systems will take into account not only the driver and the vehicle but also the environment of the vehicle. Short Range Radar Sensors allow coverage of the surroundings of the vehicle up to 25m, complementing the existing 77 GHz Radars used for adaptive cruise control systems since 1999. Although different modulation schemes are considered for SRR, ultra wide bandwidths are a common property allowing high resolution capabilities as well as high accuracy. This enables discrimination of objects on the roads and allows sufficiently accurate trajectory prediction, which enables a range of new advanced driver assistance systems fostering both active as well as passive safety. The ongoing European frequency regulatory process is converging towards a package solution, which comprises a long term frequency band for Short range radar at 79 GHz plus an interim frequency band at 24 GHz until 2014. This transitions is imposed due to protection requirements by the primary users in the 24 GHz region of the spectrum.
