A patented system for flux weakening a brushless permanent magnet (PM) motor provides continuously variable torque/speed and a greatly extended motor speed range. This function extends motor operation above the normal design maximum speed (base speed), into a range of higher speed, constant power operation. This feature is functionally equivalent to having a continuously variable transmission (CVT) built into the drive motor. This capability allows replacing the energy losses of an automatic transmission with an efficient fixed ratio drive system. In typical urban and suburban driving cycles, this system saves all of the energy wasted due to fluid slip in an automatic transmission. Because the flux weakening system takes advantage of the motor physics, motor efficiency remains high in the extended speed range above the motor base speed. Traction motor operation and the CVT field weakening control is fully integrated into the three phase controller for a seamless user interface. This new electric propulsion system for electric and hybrid vehicles dramatically improves vehicle efficiency over existing technologies.
