Recent trends in automotive electronics point towards an increasing requirement for sophisticated electronic solutions to vehicle systems with multiple functions. On the other hand, automakers are advancing global procurement of components beyond the series following further cost-cutting and production efficiency strategies. In response to this situation, suppliers are required to provide high cost-performance products in order to be globally accepted. Among the electronic Systems, powertrain controllers are one of the key components and are becoming ever more important. Electronic Controllers for powertrain systems are required to meet the demands for increased system performance and functionality at reasonable cost. It is indispensable to examine the solutions from a range of view points synthetically for cost optimization. This paper describes a cost-effective hardware and software architecture of the electronic Controllers for powertrain systems. A new method for noise reduction of a switching regulator, and a low standby current wakeup solution are also discussed as further functions needed for high performance powertrain systems. In addition to the hardware architecture design, it is indispensable to examine the solutions from a range of view points synthetically for cost optimization.
