A preliminary design optimization method for B-screw series was introduced, and the results of the optimization were given in the form of diagrams involving nondimensional parameters. The objectives of the optimization were to maximize a two-objective function the components of which are the screw open-water efficiency and the thrust coefficient. The results of the optimization confirmed the existence of an apparent conflict between the objectives and showed high sensitivity of the objective function on decision variables. The design method was outlined and described with the help of a practical case. As a result of the multiobjective capabilities of the method, the designer is able to find the best screw configuration for any loading defined by the thrust coefficient (KT). This means that for a given thrust and flow velocity, the method returns the best screw geometry that can be adopted for any value of the screw efficiency. Variants in the design procedure can be introduced when some of the screw characteristics are fixed, that is, diameter and rpm (rounds per minutes), but all of these design options are contemplated and dealt with using the outlined method. The design optimization method proposed in this paper. although referred to standard B-screw series propellers, can be applied to any other series relevant to practical applications.
