In comparison to magnesium castings and other competing materials magnesium sheet offers a variety of technical advantages. It has the potential to open new perspectives for ultralight constructions with high strength, ductility and surface requirements. The large resources and the high recycling potential predestines magnesium sheet as one of the future materials. A remarkable amount of part developments and prototyping activities have aiready been started using magnesium sheet products delivered by Salzgitter Magnesium-Technologie GmbH. The hybrid engine bonnet, the front fender as weil as crash relevant parts mentioned before represent the design and application opportunities for the automotive sector. The present paper formulates the situation and potential of magnesium sheet in contrast to traditional materials like steel and aluminium. Further it shows how magnesium sheet metal is produced nowadays. Sheet metal forming is described by the example of temperature and deformation rate dependent flow behaviour of AZ31 sheet metal. Further the drawing behaviour of magnesium is portrayed by means of cold and hot forming behaviour. Cup drawing examples at different temperatures and of various alloys are investigated.
