This study has introduced a new method of controlling air velocity in underground stations. Used in conjunction with airshafts, orifice plates could provide a cost-efficient method of supplementing other methods of air velocity reduction. They would be both simple and cheap to construct and could even be added to a tunnel after it has been built. The limitations of a tunnel constriction are that it could only be used where there is sufficient space within a given tunnel to permit the safe passage of trains and that it must be used with airshafts to provide a path through which the air could escape. On balance, this work has given tunnel constructors another tool to use in their challenge to produce a safe and comfortable environment for passengers. It has also shown that by looking outside the known practices of railway engineering, other disciplines may already employ technologies that may be able to be transferred to provide solutions within the railway industry. AEA Technology Rail plans to undertake model-scale tests, using their Moving Model Rig, to further examine the potential for this novel method.
