Investigation of the tribology of cold rolling using mechanical simulation technique

The frictional conditions at the interface of a plastic deformation operation are responsible for the total energy consumption when taking the deformation energy and the frictional loss into account. Surface topography before deformation affects the frictional behaviour at the interface, which in turn affects the level and distribution of plastic deformation. The surface topography after deformation operations is determined by a combination of the initial surface topography, the frictional behaviour at the interface and the level and distribution of the plastic deformation. Friction testing with mechanical simulation techniques are more and more important, because of the complexity of the technical process. Reflecting the cold-rolling process several specific details must be considered. Process parameters like roll gap geometry, the surface topography, the plastic flow of the bulk material and the deformation speed and the mechanical and chemical behaviour of the lubricant must be simulated. All this will provoke the lubricant entrainment into the deformation zone and hence the frictional conditions. In the following the advantages and disadvantages of the flat-drawing test and the Asymmetric Friction Upsetting, AFU, test are discussed.
