This paper describes an advanced software simulation tool (ES-Sim) for analysis, design and control of electric scooters. ES-Sim is the acronym for Electrical Scooter Simulator and it was developed from Department of Electrical System and Automation, University of Pisa, for Piaggio S.p.A., innovative vehicle section, one of the European leading industries in scooter production. ES-Sim tool has two main objectives. The first one is to get a user-friendly SW tool, able to easily simulate the scooter system as a combination of primitive modules (to be specific, five different classes of modules are considered: the battery, the electric drive, the battery charger, the mechanical loads, the auxiliary electrical loads). The modularity of ES-Sim makes it an easy-to-use SW tool suitable for quick testing different solutions for electric scooters in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. In such a way the development of different solutions (e.g. the choice of different electric drives for traction, or of different strategies of chargers) is easy to compare, cheap and Safe; this step is mandatory before starting any experimental set-up. The second objective of ES-Sim is to integrate a database in its structure. Each new component can be inserted in a standard database and its data are automatically passed to the SW tool. ES-Sim distinguishes from any commercial SW tool, because it works both as a database and as a simulation tool, simultaneously: it seems and it can be used as a standard independent database, but data are available to dynamic simulator in an automatic way. Simulations are presented to demonstrate ES-Sim capabilities.
