Application of NDT methods to control of a series 342(362) electric locomotive and the determination of reliability level

The paper describes our experience with the application of NDT methods to preventive checking of railway vehicles, especially locomotives and motor trains for passenger transport. The reliability of the entire mechanical system of a series 342 locomotive, manufactured by Ansaldo, Italy, was analysed. In the case when the mechanical system is not working within the established parameters with a 95% probability of operational reliability, the frequency and extent of NDT control of the critical mechanical parts should be increased. Analyses of the maintenance state of railway vehicles were conducted and the critical spots of individual assemblies, i.e., the characteristic parts of these assemblies, were ascertained. The method and the periods of testing of individual characteristic parts were prescribed on the basis of the shots obtained during periodic examinations and the maintenance conditions.
