FIVE Project concerns the integration of PV modules on health emergency vehicles. This project headed by Jaen University involves a public enterprise of health emergencies in Andalusia (EPES), a PV modules manufacturer (ISOFOTON) and an enterprise especialized in bodyworks and equipment of health emergency vehicles. The FIVE Project aims to solve some important difficulties that EPES has encountered on its daily operation: the high electric consumption of medical equipment fitted on health emergency vehicles, together with the short periods when the alternator is working, cause an early deterioration of the vehicle batteries. A consequence of such problems results in a high maintenance cost due to the frequent change of the batteries, and, what is more important, several difficulties, in some ocassions, to start the vehicle in very critical situations for patient lives. In order to solve these problems, the main purpose of this project is designing, implementing and evaluating an ambulance prototype with an integrated PV generator that will make these vehicles performance better. But the main task is not only to develop PV technology to improve health emergency vehicles daily operation but to give this kind of vehicles a larger autonomy too. Moreover, this project will develop standard solutions of PV integration in vehicles, analysing either technical or legislation aspects. Another innovative aspect will be the monitoring of autonomous mobile PV installations, carrying out a study of the system performance in swiftly changeable environmental conditions. In order to achieve the different objectives mentioned above, a health emergency vehicle known as prototype has been designed and built up.
