Multilayer stainless steels for automobile exhaust systems

The creation of a new class of materials - cast metallic multilayer compositions allows on a basis of ferrite chromium-alloyed steels to receive alloys complying the modern requirements of scientific and technical progress in motor industry. The elements of 'know-how' for multilayer sheet metal from corrosion-proof steels, conditionally named 'liquid sandwich' are described in this article. The conformities of cast composite formation are stated. The effect of carbon content on structure formation and properties of sheets at heating and cooling with various speeds is shown. The physical and mechanical properties of multilayer rolled sheets were investigated. It is shown there using efficiency in comparison with existing steels. The technology allows receiving multilayer sheets with the improved complex of properties and expands area of ferrite steels use in exhaust systems of automobiles. Multilayer sheets from chromium alloyed ferrite steels can be joined by spot welding and pressure contact welding and by shielded arc welding with using of consumable and permanent electrodes. Increase of the complex of properties of details and units of exhaust systems of automobiles from multilayer sheets both the rather low technological and operational expenses are the factors, which promote expansion of area of chromium alloyed ferrite steels use.
