A boundary element method, based on surface vorticity distributions as unknowns, is applied to unsteady propeller flows. The formulation is characterized by weakly singular kernels permitting efficient and accurate solutions. A pressure-type Kutta condition is satisfied along the trailing edge of the blades. The method is compared to other boundary element methods and experiments, showing that reliable information concerning the time-history of the pressure distributions and integrated propeller characteristics can be obtained. Although only potential flow applications are presented, the surface vorticity formulation can be used to couple rotational (viscous) flow and potential flow directly, permitting to overcome the limitations of the weak interaction assumption and to improve numerical propeller analysis.
