Today's variant variety in'automobile development is only capable by the using methods of virtual product development. One established method is Digital Mock Up, where the concurrently designed parts and assemblies were checked for collision, clash and clearance. Management of the needed data is done by product data management systems. For the management of the multiple variants configuration management and variant structure lists are known from the Bill of Material (BOM). Both do manage more fix structures where the structured parts are not changed very often. These methods and their IT Implementation need quite a lot of detailed knowledge to work with these systems so that designers in Product development departments can not use it easily. Therefore and because of the high dynamic and iteration frequency of the processes the use of these systems in early product development phases is quite difficult. In this paper therefore a practical approach is presented providing an easy way to assign CAD models to previously defined variants using simple tables as user interface but using configuration management in the background. With this easy assignment a broader range of virtual variants can be defined and checked with DMU methods.
