In the past few years, new engines have been added to the MC series. For large container ships, the K98MC and K98MC-C engines have been developed, and on testbed the 12-cylinder version has delivered more than 100000 bhp on one shaft. Solutions to power requirements in excess of 125000 bhp will be presented in the paper. Additionally, the S80MC-C and S90MC-C engines have been developed for VLCC ships. The paper deals with the design improvements introduced on these engines, supported by service experience obtained from K98MC, K98MC-C and S90MC-C. The new design, originally introduced on the engine structure for medium bore engines, will be discussed with the emphasis on the large bore engines, and with special focus on the frame box, bedplate and main bearing assembly. The reliability of the new design of the engines structure is secured by extended use of advanced calculations, which have been verified on testbed. On all large bore engines, i.e. 800 mm, 900 mm and 980 mm bore diameter, a new combustion chamber has been introduced. This involves a complete redesign of piston crown, cylinder cove, and cylinder liner. The service experience is very positive, and this paper will discuss supplementary items to a paper to be presented on the User Day. Significant improvements have been introduced in the fuel system The slide-type fuel valves have proved to be excellent in regard to environmental aspects, as well as cylinder condition. Finally, the development of the new electronic high-pressure cylinder lubricator will be presented with the emphasis on service results.
